In a nationwide effort to improve the quality of fresh fruits and vegetables, Chemiphar (U) Ltd, TechnoServe, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands have collaborated to raise awareness and empower farmers throughout Uganda.
This initiative has spanned multiple regions, including the Kigezi and Ankole subregions, as well as the Sebei region, encompassing Kapchorwa, Kween, Bulambuli, and Sironko districts.
These regions, known for their abundant production of onions, tomatoes, peppers, passion fruits, watermelons, and pineapples, faced challenges with quality control. Ugandan produce, particularly hot peppers, had previously encountered issues in international markets due to quality concerns, impacting both farmers and the nation’s export sector.
Comprehensive training sessions were conducted in Kabale and other regions, focusing on lead farmers, processors, aggregators, and exporters. The training covered essential aspects of quality control across pre-harvest, harvest, and post-harvest stages, emphasizing adherence to both international and national quality standards.
The campaign also addressed the safe consumption of fresh produce by ensuring rigorous testing throughout the value chain. Through these efforts, the initiative aims to raise awareness, empower farmers, and promote sustainable agricultural practices across Uganda.
Together, we’re driving forward with a commitment to safe, high-quality fruits and vegetables, ensuring that Uganda's agricultural sector thrives both locally and globally.
